Since mid-May, the long-running conflict in Israel and Palestine has again escalated into violence. Tension over attempts to evict Palestinians from their homes in Jerusalem exploded at one of the city’s holiest sites for both Muslims and Jews, with Israeli police clashing with Palestinians inside the Al Aqsa Mosque. Palestinian militant groups in Gaza fired rockets into Israel, which in turn responded with airstrikes, and the air bombardments have continued. Hundreds of Palestinians have died and the injured in both Palestine and Israel is approaching 10,000.

ICUJP friends Estee ChandlerJewish Voice for Peace (JVP), and Salam Al-MarayatiMuslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), will update us on the situation and their organizations' responses to the crisis. MPAC will hold discussions on the conflict in the coming weeks and Salam will share details as they're confirmed. Estee reports that JVP members and supporters have been in the streets demonstrating, holding vigils and standing with Palestinians demanding justice. Also, the annual Lobby Days for JVP Action (sister organization to JVP) fortuitously just took place, with 250 people in 70 meetings lobbying Congressional representatives and staffers.

Salam Al-MarayatiSalam Al-Marayati is nationally recognized for his commitment to improving the public understanding of Islam and policies impacting American Muslims. President and co-founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, he oversees MPAC’s groundbreaking civic engagement, public policy, and advocacy work. Salam is an expert on Islam in the West, Muslim reform movements, human rights, democracy, national security, and Middle East politics. His writings have appeared in major national news publications including the New York Times, Wall Street JournalWashington Post, and Los Angeles Times) and he has been interviewed nationally and internationally in outlets including CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and C-SPAN).

Estee ChandlerEstee Chandler is a longtime film and media professional who now focuses her work on human rights. In 2010 she founded the Los Angeles chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace. JVP is a national organization promoting solutions based on human rights and international law for both Palestinians and Jewish Israelis, working in broad coalition with other like-minded organizations. A member of JVP's Board of Directors, Estee also serves as board chair for JVP Action. Along with Nagwa Ibrahim, she is the Host/Producer of KPFK’s long-running radio show Middle East in Focus.
